WordPress vs custom website: which is better for a Nepali business?

Written by Reviewed by Updated

This is the first decision most of our website clients face, and there's no single right answer. WordPress powers a huge share of the web because it's flexible and easy to edit. Custom websites, built with frameworks like React and Next.js, are leaner and faster, and can do things WordPress struggles with.

The honest way to choose is to look at what the site has to do in three years, not just on launch day.

Which should you choose?

Choose WordPress if…

  • You'll publish blog posts, news or notices every week
  • You want a WooCommerce store with a modest catalogue
  • Your budget is under NPR 60,000
  • Your team already knows WordPress

Choose Custom website if…

  • Speed and Core Web Vitals are a priority
  • You need logins, bookings, dashboards or integrations
  • You want a design that doesn't look like a theme
  • You've been hacked before and want fewer moving parts

Is WordPress bad for SEO?

No. A well-built WordPress site with a light theme, an SEO plugin, schema and good hosting can rank as well as anything. Problems come from heavy page builders, dozens of plugins and no maintenance, which make sites slow and sometimes insecure.

Can a custom website be edited without a developer?

Yes, if it's built with a CMS. We connect custom sites to an editor so you can change text, images, blog posts and notices yourself. Developers are only needed for new features or layouts.

What about the middle option?

Many of our builds are prerendered React sites with a headless CMS: you get the speed of a custom site and the editing comfort of WordPress. It costs a little more up front and less to maintain.

Questions

Is WordPress cheaper than a custom website in Nepal?

Usually at the start: NPR 25,000–60,000 versus NPR 35,000–1,50,000+. Over three years the gap narrows, because WordPress needs paid plugins, updates and more maintenance.

Which is more secure?

A custom site has fewer moving parts, so fewer things to attack. WordPress can be very secure too, but only with licensed plugins, regular updates, a firewall and backups.

Can I move from WordPress to custom later?

Yes. We migrate content, keep URLs or set up 301 redirects, and monitor rankings so you don't lose traffic.
