Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. Google still treats good ones as votes of trust. The problem is that much of what's sold as 'backlink packages' in Nepal is automated spam: forum profiles, comment links and foreign directories that do nothing, or worse.
The short answer
The links that help Nepali businesses most are from relevant, real websites: Nepali news portals, industry associations, partners, suppliers, local directories and guides that cite you. A handful of these each month beats hundreds of low-quality links.
Good links vs bad links
| Usually helps | Usually useless or risky |
|---|---|
| Nepali news and business media | Bulk forum profile links |
| Industry associations and chambers | Blog comment links |
| Partners, suppliers and clients | Paid links on unrelated foreign blogs |
| Local directories with real traffic | Link farms and PBNs |
| Guides and research others cite | '1,000 backlinks for NPR 2,000' offers |
Practical ways to earn links in Nepal
- Get listed in your industry association or chamber of commerce member directory
- Ask suppliers and partners to list you as a client, dealer or partner
- Share useful data or a survey with business media; journalists need stories
- Write guest articles for industry publications, not random blogs
- Sponsor or speak at local events that publish attendee and sponsor pages
- Create genuinely useful tools or guides others want to reference
- Find unlinked mentions of your brand and ask for a link
Local citations still matter
For local SEO, consistent listings of your name, address and phone on trusted directories help Google trust your location. They don't need to be numerous; they need to be accurate and match your Google Business Profile exactly.
How many links do you need?
It depends on competitors. Check the top three results for your target keyword in Ahrefs or Semrush and see how many linking websites they have. In many Nepali niches, 10–30 good linking sites are enough to compete. In travel, education abroad and ecommerce, it can be far more.
Signs your agency is building bad links
- They won't show you the list of links
- Links come from sites in unrelated languages or countries
- Anchor text is the exact same keyword over and over
- Link counts jump by hundreds in a month
