Instagram in Nepal is smaller than Facebook (around 4 million users against nearly 15 million), but it skews younger, urban and more willing to spend on fashion, food, beauty, travel and gifts. If that's your customer, Instagram can outperform Facebook. If you sell tractors or insurance, it probably won't.
Is Instagram right for your business?
| Works well | Works sometimes | Usually weak |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing, shoes, jewellery | Restaurants and cafés | B2B services |
| Beauty, salons, skincare | Hotels and travel | Agriculture inputs |
| Gifts, cakes, home décor | Gyms, studios, clinics | Industrial products |
| Photography, events, weddings | Education and courses | Government and NGO services |
Set up the profile to sell
- Switch to a Business or Creator account to get insights and contact buttons
- Bio: what you sell, where, and how to order, in three short lines
- One link in bio: a WhatsApp link, your website or a simple link page with your best products
- Story highlights for Prices, Reviews, Delivery and How to order
- Connect it to your Facebook page in Meta Business Suite so one team handles both inboxes
Reels do the heavy lifting
Reach on Instagram mostly comes from Reels now. They don't need to be polished: a phone, natural light and a clear first two seconds beat an expensive shoot. Show the product being used, a before-and-after, a 'packing your order' clip, or answer one common question per video. Add captions; most people watch with the sound off.
Hashtags and captions
Hashtags matter less than they used to, but a few specific ones still help discovery: mix your city (#kathmanduFood, #pokharaCafe), your product type and your brand tag. Skip the 30 random hashtags. In captions, put the price or the key fact in the first line, and tell people exactly how to order.
What Instagram ads cost from Nepal
Instagram ads run through Meta Ads Manager, the same as Facebook, and you pay in USD with a dollar card. Small Nepali businesses commonly test with USD 3–10 a day. Reach for local audiences is cheap by global standards, but don't judge on reach. Judge on messages, profile visits from your city and, most of all, orders.
| Goal | Campaign type | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Get DMs from buyers | Engagement → Messages | Cost per conversation |
| Grow local followers | Awareness or Reels boost, city targeting | Cost per follower from your city |
| Sell from a website | Sales with Meta Pixel | Cost per purchase |
| Promote an event or offer | Reach with a short date range | Reach + messages |
Working with Nepali creators
A Reel from a local creator with the right audience often beats an ad. Start with smaller creators in your city who already talk about your category. Our influencer marketing guide covers rates and how to brief them.
