If your organic traffic has felt flatter in 2026 even while rankings held up, you're not imagining it. AI answers inside Google's results are changing how often people click through at all, and the data on this is now solid enough to act on.
The numbers
- 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click between January and April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024 (SparkToro, using Similarweb clickstream data)
- AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of searches, and click-through rates to websites drop by nearly 60% when one shows
- A separate randomised study found that when an AI Overview appeared, organic clicks fell 38% and zero-click searches rose from 54% to 72%
- AI Mode (Google's more conversational search) played a limited role so far, but Semrush found 92–94% of its sessions end with no external click, so its impact is likely to grow
This hits some searches harder than others
Branded searches (someone typing your business name), local searches ('plumber in Baneshwor') and high-intent transactional searches are affected less, because people still need to click through to book, call or compare prices. Purely informational searches, 'how to' questions and definitions, are where AI Overviews now answer the question directly and fewer people click anywhere at all.
Being cited still matters, even without the click
Seer Interactive's data, cited in the SparkToro report, found a higher paid click-through rate (15.74% vs 11.19%) for brands that were cited by name inside an AI Overview, even when the organic click didn't happen. Being the source an AI answer names and trusts carries value on its own: people remember the brand and search for it directly later.
What to actually do about it
- Write the direct answer near the top of the page, in plain language, the way you'd explain it to a customer, not buried under three paragraphs of introduction
- Keep chasing SEO rankings, but stop treating organic click volume alone as the scorecard; track branded search volume and AI-citation mentions too
- Invest in being the business people already know by name, through reviews, social presence and word of mouth, not just search rankings
- Make sure your most important answers (pricing, services, location, policies) are stated in clear sentences AI tools can quote accurately, not only in a PDF or an image
SparkToro's Rand Fishkin, who co-authored the underlying research, puts it plainly: SEO still matters, but matching the referral traffic volumes of a few years ago through organic search alone is an increasingly unrealistic goal for most publishers. The businesses doing well are the ones building visibility in more than one place at once.
